Road Round up - June 2008
SAC Road Running Report June 2008
Shrewsbury Athletic Club's successes over the summer fells look set to be repeated on the road race scene, now that a number of road race series are under way. After the initial races, the trio of Kevin Francis, Tim Smith and Steve Hatton have emerged as top club performers, each in turn leading the county town squad home in the different races in three main road race series, namely the Telford Sexarathon, the Oswestry Pentarathon and the North Staffs Road Runners Association series.
In the Sexarathon Series, Francis lead the charge at the Lilleshall 10K in 12th place and 4th Vet over 40, but it was Smith's turn at the Phoenix Flyer finishing in 14th place, then Steve Hatton shining in the Shropshire 4 mile race at Granville Park in 13th place and 1st Vet over 45. They were followed in each race by the consistent Rob Hall, returning 23rd, 26th and 21st places in the three events.
In the Oswestry Pentarathon at the Park Hall 5K Race, Smith spearheaded the team in 9th place, with Hatton 12th and 4th Vet over 45, Dominic Kirby in pursuit in 14th place and Ashley Gray, 20th.
In the North Staffs Series, at the Alsager 5 Road Race, Kevin Francis finished 106th, followed by Steve France 240th and Rob Hall 304th. At the Newcastle 7 Road Race, Smith finished 11th, Dominic Kirby 14th and Chris Wakeman 24th and 4th Vet over 45.
On the Half Marathon scene, Francis and Wakeman excelled at Stafford, with Francis finishing 31st and 5th Vet over 40 and Wakeman 72nd in a field of over 1200 runners. In the Ironbridge Half Marathon, Hatton had a fine run, finishing 14th and 2nd Vet over 45, with Ben Nash 138th and Ralph Jones 163rd in a field of 540 runners. In the Chester Shell half marathon , SAC runners competed well against a strong field on the fast course. Steve Hatton was first home for the club recording a time of 80mins 44seconds to claim 3rd place prize in the V45 category. Dom Kirby ran a PB of 81mins 18secs to edge out Kev Francis, who claimed his prize with a 4th in the V40’s. Chris Wakeman finished in 100th position to earn the club a creditable 4th place overall in the team rankings.
Further afield, Smith travelled to the Channel Islands, and successfully competed in the Guernsey Liberation Day seven mile Road Race, returning a creditable 5th place in 42/34 for the fast flat coastal course. Smith, having recently joined the veteran ranks, will look to bolster the club’s already strong veteran squad in forthcoming team events.
