Shrewsbury Athletic Club extended their lead at the top of the division after an excellent victory at Bangor. On a long and muddy course Shrewsbury scored a team total of just 127 points.

Race organiser Kevin Francis said “It was great to see so many runners out today. Attingham Park is a great place to run in and The National Trust deserve a big ‘thank you’ for being prepared to host this race. I’d like to thank all the runners for the positive feedback – they all seemed to enjoy the scenic off-road course, and we look forward to seeing them all next year. I’d also like to thank the sponsors who generously donated prizes and helped with financial support, Up and Running Shrewsbury, Rybrook BMW Shrewsbury, Mytton and Mermaid Hotel Atcham, Women In Mind Shrewsbury, Welti Tennis and Fitness Shrewsbury, Tesco Shrewsbury, Harry Tuffins Churchstoke and Tanners Wines Shrewsbury”.
Given the success of the race, the organisers are in discussions with the National Trust to stage the race in 2009. A provisional date of Sunday 8th November has been set. Confirmation and more details will be in the running press next year.
Congratulations to Pat 'Supergranny' Higgins on breaking her own W50 World Record in the Hammer Pentathlon. Pat threw the 5 different weights of hammer a combined distance of 128.91m, beating her own world record from last year by 1.09m! Well done Pat! Also on the same day Peter won the M65 category with a combined distance of 151.26m, to become Midland Champion. These results are all the more remarkable in view of the atrocious weather conditions, and the 2 inches of mud around the throwing area!

Another strong showing from Shrewsbury Athletic Club in this, the third meeting in the four race series. 12 athletes made the short trip across to the William Brookes school in Wenlock for the largely flat, but muddy course. Consistency, and indeed significant improvement was the order of the day, with many of our athletes being rewarded for their efforts with some very good individual performances once again, as well as a 1st in the U13B team placings.
U11 Boys Strong running from Ross Kirby saw him record a seasons best finish in 2nd place, just edged out by his Telford rival by 2 seconds. Luke Howes was again consistent, running a very strong second half of the course to finish 7th after a 3 way battle. Debutant Eddie Brittleton ran superbly throughout to finish 14th and can be proud of his performance.
U13 Girls Our girls showed progress in the U13 category with all 3 athletes moving up the listings from their last outing at Oswestry. Becky Peet led the team home in 25th, closely followed by Elizabeth Hooper in 26th. Abigail Lavis completed the trio finishing in 37th.
U13 Boys Arguably the race of the day in which Shrewsbury fielded a full team to finish top points scorers. Ben Ashcroft was again the victor, though he had to work hard for this win. A head to head sprint against John Fletcher (Bridgnorth) for the final 150m saw Ashcroft edge out his rival after a gutsy effort from both lads.Jack Fielding returned in the club colours to finish comfortably in 3rd place, while another debutant, Cian Faichney impressed in 14th place.Finishing off the scorers was Daniel Lucas in 21st, while Andrew Hickman narrowly ran out of ground in pursuit of chasing down his rival, finishing 26th.
U15 Girls Lydia Peet again was our sole competitor, and her commitment was rewarded with a seasons best placing of 11th. A great reward for her hard work, and she still managed her customary sprint finish!
Again many thanks to Athletes & parents alike for your support today. Final race in the series is December 7th at Bridgnorth. Please confirm your availability at this race - a full team could see us sneak 3rd place in the Boys team competition.
Many thanks to all the entrants, marshalls, organisors and sponsors of todays race. Over 200 runners braved the wet conditions for the first running of this race at Attingham Park.
Congratulations to two of our senior members of the club who have recently been called up to the Welsh Team for the British and Irish Masters Cross Country International.
Club Captain Graham Jones makes his 2nd appearance in a Welsh vest follwing up on last years debut at Belfast, while Wales regular Anna Bartlett again represents her country. Selection was judged on performances in the North Wales X Country League as well as other relevant qualifying races.
They will compete in Swansea on 15th November.
This is great reward for both athletes for their efforts throughout the season. Everyone at the club wishes them well in the event.
