Expectations were greatly exceeded when Shrewsbury Athletic Club staged their second Mad Jack’s Five Mile Race, held in conjunction with the National Trust, at Attingham Park on Sunday.
The prospect of the exciting off-road course, picturesque surroundings and praise of last year’s inaugural event, resulted in over 250 pre-entries and a total of over 350 entries on the day of the race. With ideal dry, calm weather conditions, the runners again praised the course and organisation, which, this year incorporated a section of the course through the Trust’s pond.
The race, now established as an event for runners of all abilities, was won by Richard Roberts of Eryri in 29.01, followed by Paul Ward of Wrekin Road Runners in second place in 29.23, Robin Sedman Smith of Telford Athletic Club third in 30.41 and Pete Middleton of Shrewsbury Athletic Club fourth in 31.00. The womens’ race was won by Jessica Bailey of Telford Athletic Club in 36.53, with Stephanie Bailey, unattached ,second in 37.07, Yvonne Hill of Oswestry Olympians, third in 39.08 and Lauren Bailey of Trismart ,fourth in 39.50.
Mark Agnew, General Manager at Attingham Park, said:” Thank you to Shrewsbury Athletic Club and all our sponsors and to all the National Trust Team for making this such a successful race. I was so pleased to see such a massive turn out and all the runners enjoying our newly restored pond”.Race Organiser Kevin Francis praised the excellent turn out , the organising teams comprising the National Trust’s Mark Agnew and his team, the Shrewsbury Athletic Club marshalls and registration team and Keith and Pauline Richards and Charlie Levington for timekeeping and results.
He also paid tribute to the sponsors BMW Rybrook Shrewsbury,Tanners Wines Shrewsbury, Wroxeter Roman Vineyard, Up and Running Shrewsbury, Tuffins Churchstoke, Mytton and Mermaid Hotel Atcham and Tesco Shrewsbury.
A provisional date of Sunday 7th November 2010 is being discussed with the National Trust for next year’s race.
