SAC Running Report 4/7/10

With the summer fell and road racing season now in full swing, Shrewsbury Athletic Club in-form stars Steve Cale and Pete Middleton are currently excelling in their respective disciplines. Steve, with victory at the Pontesbury Fell Race and two second placings at the Batch Bash and Rodney’s Pillar Races, currently heads the Summer Fell series, while Pete, 5th at the Ironbridge 4, 4th at the Phoenix Flyer and 3rd at the Shropshire 4, is currently third in the Telford Sexarathon Road Race Series.

On the fells, club captain Graham Jones heads up the Veterans over 50 category, while Juan Castillo has returned to the county to produce some fine displays and Jack Francis, following in dad Kevin’s footsteps, is currently challenging for top place in the Junior Male category. The versatile duo of Kevin Francis and Paul Clarke are having successful series on both road and fell, in the Veteran over 40 and 50 categories respectively, Francis currently 1st in the over 40 category in the Sexarathon Series.

There have been consistent performances in the Womens’ events, with Anna Bartlett, first at Caradoc and Batch heading up the Fell Series, while Claire Burgoyne , first senior woman at Phoenix, Shropshire and Ironbridge, currently heads up that category in the Sexarathon Series.

Severn Loop Summer 5K Report 30/6/10

Shrewsbury Athletic Club’s first summer staging of their popular Severn Loop 5K Race took place in Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park on Sunday, where over 100 runners competed around the picturesque course on the hottest day of the year. Despite the heat, the fast accurately measured course produced some fast times, with the race attracting some of the County’s top road runners as well as club and unattached runners of all abilities.

Paul Ward of Wrekin Road Runners was the comfortable winner after leading from the start, in a time of 15/45, followed by Robin Sedman-Smith of Telford Athletic Club, second in 16/11 and Dan Young, unattached , third in 16/20. The Womens’ Race also produced some fast times with Susan Davies of Croft Ambrey first in 19/40, Helen Skelton of Newport and District Running Club second in 19/50 and Helena Bramwell of Shropshire Shufflers third in 20/37.

The Junior 2K Race attracted a field of enthusiastic young runners with Arthur Charlesworth first in 7/09, Ross Kirby second in 8/24 and Dan Elliot third in 8/37 in the Boys’ Race and Lucy Grime first in 9/08, Ellie Hutchins second in 9/18 and Jessica Harper third in 9/33 in the Girls’ Race.

The Severn Loop Winter 5K will take place on Monday 27th December 2010.
