Three SAC runners competed in the first ever running of the 'Powis Arms Bury Ditches Hill Race' in Lydbury North on Sunday 26th September. Although the field was small with only 23 finishers, this was a fantastic event, well organised, well marshalled and held in conjunction with the Powis Arms Beer Festival.
On a challenging 5.7 mile course the results were as follows:
2 Steve Waters 43.35
3 Steve Turk 44.25
5 Chris Wakeman 45.42

Shropshire Young Athletes League Cross Country
Clear bright skies and good racing conditions welcomed the seasons opener of the Shropshire Young Athlete Cross Country league held at Adams' Grammar School Newport.
With a handful of debutants wearing the club colours of Shrewsbury AC for the first time on the mud, there was a good depth to the squad in most age categories.
For the first time in number of seasons a full team was fielded in the first event of the day, the U15Girls race over 3000m.
Emily Mitchell and Charlotte Westwood were joined by Chloe Everall in her fist outing for the club. Emily stuck with the early pace, settling in with a chase group to finish in a good 10th position. Charlotte and Chloe raced together for the majority to finish and 16th and 17th positions, which was good enough to put the team comfortably in 3rd place overall.
Hoping to continue last seasons great XC form were the U15Boys duo of Ben Ashcroft and George Speakman, both of whom have come off successful track seasons too. They were joined by new member and Triathlete Ryan Cullen.
The great racing surface suited Ben & George who pulled away from the field together strongly, before Ben kicked for home with 500m to go.
A one-two finish for Shrewsbury with Ryan racing strongly in 7th position puts the trio top of the pile in the team event, and looking good.
One of the fastest races of the day saw Maya Richardson run a very competitive race throughout as the sole SAC competitor in the U11Girls. A 6th place finish was well earned by taking the race on early, and there was only 3 seconds separating fourth to sixth positions, so surely more to come from Maya.
The loss of 2 athletes through illness prevented a full U11Boys team being fielded. The trio of Fergus Stevens, Archie Hale & Sebastian Westwood put in a strong team performance to lie 4th team overall which is great going in the circumstances. Fergus had his best race thus far for SAC finishing strongly in 6th (or 9th?!), while the debutants Archie and Sebastian in 15th & 22nd place both competed keenly to earn their final positions.
Ellie Hutchings made her bow on the XC scene alongside Katharine Smith who has moved up to the 2000m distance this season.
Smith revelled in the longer course and followed up last years form with a stong run for 7th this time round, only a handful of seconds behind 5th place. Ellie's run
improved as the end neared, and this enabled her to pick off a couple of rivals for a solid run home in 24th.
The final race of the day saw our U13Boys run maturely and as a team. This was rewarded with 2nd team place overall on the day, another solid start.
Led by the reliable Luke Howes in 7th, and Ross Kirby 9th, the duo of Stuart Duff and Freddie Turner (11th & 12th) ran superbly together to pick off numerous
opponents on the two lap course, and contributed excellently to add to the team score.
A strong start to the campaign from all our athletes. The ability to put a full team out was shown to be profitable, and the attitude and determination showed by all on the day bodes well for the remaining races.
