Shropshire Young Athletes League Cross Country, Oswestry
Shrewsbury's young athletes continued their fine early form on the cross country circuit in the second fixture of the 2010 season.
With 4 of the teams in medal positions after the first race in Newport, all at the club were looking for a repeat performance over the hills in Oswestry.
Emily Mitchell & Charlotte Westwood found the early pace a touch too hot in the first race of the day, but after settling down they both came through nicely during the second lap to steal a number of valuable places for 13th and 18th respectively. Unfortunately for Chloe Everall, an ankle injury sustained on lap one prevented her completing the race.
Maya Richardson again was the sole representative wearing the club colours in the U11girls race, and again showed her strength to compete strongly throughout. This particular category is producing some strong running from top to bottom, and both races so far have been ran at a fair pace. With a strong middle section, Maya put herself in contention for a top 10 finish, before loosing out in a competitive run in to finish 15th.
Our strong U15boys trio again raced well to maintain their position atop the standings. Ben Ashcroft again led the team home, in 3rd position, with George Speakman in his footsteps in 4th place. Ryan Cullen again backed up the front runners with a strong finish in 8th place for second team on the day.
The excellent team running this season has been epitomised by the performances of the boys teams in all the age groups. Again the U13boys packed together
and paced each other along during the 2lap course. Luke Howes and Ross Kirby again worked together to stay in contention with the chasing pack who themseleves
were in the shadows of another dominant Telford 1-2. Their efforts were rewarded with 9 &10th place, and with the trio of Stuart Duff, Freddie and Tom Turner in 14th,15th and 16th place, ensured the SAC team score was strong enough to see of the challenge of hosts Oswestry for 2nd team position behind Telford.
Following hot on the heels of the diminutive Fergus Stevens, who again comfortably secured a top 10 finish, the U1boys team ran tirelessly for a superb 3rd place on the day, only 7points behind the host club Oswestry. Stevens (8th), had a full team behind him with schoolmate Lloyd Humphreys and Archie Hale in 13th &14th. Only
a few seconds behind was Rhys Humphreys, brother of Lloyd , in 17th on his first outing for the club. Sebastian Westwood made huge strides to finish 24th and again finished with a sprint and a smile. A hugely satisfying team run which puts the U11s back in the mix for the team competition.
The core of this team have a further year in this age categorgy, and are showing great potential as they gain valuable experience in each race.
Next fixture is 14th November at Much Wenlock William Brooks School, normal race timetable.
