Severn Loop 5km UPDATE on 21st December

The organisers of the Severn Loop 5k race are very hopeful that the event will go ahead as planned. A thaw is forecast for Christmas Day and Boxing Day so hopefully the course will be free of snow and ice.

Due to disruption of the postal service a substantial number of pre-entries have only just been processed. Numbers will not be sent out to these entrants as there is little liklihood of them arriving prior to the event. If you have sent a pre-entry and have not received your number please collect it from the registration desk on the day.

Registration for the event will take place in the lower room at the Boathouse pub. Please use the steps from the pub car park to access the room. The staff are anxious that runners do not walk through the pub prior to the race as the cleaning staff will be busy at this time. The presentation will also take place at the Boathouse between 11:30 and 12 midday.

Please visit this site for further updates prior to race day.

Thank you in anticipation.

Shropshire Cross Country Championships - Lilleshall 11th December

For the second weekend in a row, SAC again returned home with medals, this time after the County Championships held at the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall. With the recent snow now long gone the going was surprisingly good underfoot as our young athletes readied for battle against the assembled rivals from across the 'Shire.
Despite only entering 2 teams , both boys teams, in the mornings fixture the lads all equitted themselves superbly and again demonstrated the strength we are fortunate to have within the in the junior ranks of the club.

Following up on the SYAL silver medal won by the U13 boys team, again a team 5 turned out for the Championship race. Stuart Duff has had a fine end to the winter season, this time recording the first SAC runner home, leading Ross Kirby in 9th & 10th. The Turner twins, Freddie & Tom were close in pursuit with Hamish McCartney rounding off the team placings as the lads again medalled, this time with team Bronze.

After his recent individual Gold medal in the SYAL league, all eyes again fell on Ben Ashcroft as he led his U15 team. Backed by Ryan Cullen, who is another showing his strength in the latter stages of the season the lads secured team Gold by the narrowest of margins. George Speakman returned from injury in 7th and William McCartney in XXth, to round off the scoring with Alex Robinson Bebb withdrawing with injury.

With 2 teams fielded, the return of Gold & Bronze individual medals for Ben & Ryan U15 Team Gold & U13 Team Bronze made for a successful days racing for the club. Well done to all the athletes once again.

Seniors:
A hugely dissapointing field of only 18 senior men lined up the County Champs this year, due to a fixture clash which took out much of the competition.
SAC senior men put out half the field with 9 runners, and each returned with a medal! The Senior men claimed the Team Gold, behind fell running supremo Steve Cale's 3rd place. Ian Howarth (4th), Pete Middleton (6th), Kev Francis (7th), Dom Kirby (8th) and Steve Turk (10th) rounded off the scoring.

In the womens race, only Emma Sheeky lined up our club colours and her commitment was rewarded with an individual Bronze medal.

Shropshire Young Athletes League, 4/4, Bridgnorth

Crisp snow and firm ground made for fast exciting races throughout the day at Oldbury Wells School, where the Counties top young athletes battled for final medal honours in the finale of the Shropshire Young Athletes League. Host club, Bridgnorth AC worked tirelessly to ensure the final fixture was able to go ahead as planned this weekend. Unsafe conditions added to the workload and resulted in a change of course, which the Shrewsbury athletes relished.

The girls team was reduced to just a single runner on the day, with Maya Richardson in the U11 race. As in all the races in this category this season, an extremley fast pace was set from the off. Maya stuck with a chasing pack for the first half before she was dropped as a second increase in pace broke this group up. Nevertheless, a good finish to end up 17th for Maya, who has been ever present this season as our sole U11 competitor.

A progressive season for Shrewsbury has seen the club field full teams in the boys U11 and U13 competitions, while injuries have hampered the U15's from fielding full teams in each race. As it was, this strength in numbers and quality has proven to be valuable with the boys securing the clubs only medals of the Cross Country Season.

First race with an SAC interest was the U15 boys, where Ben Ashcroft was in the driving seat for the individual title and also with his team sitting in the medals. Shrewsburys Ryan Cullen took the pace for the first lap to stretch the field as he was joined by Ashcroft and Oswestry's Jimmy Kershaw. The breakaway trio kept up a relentless pace to breakaway from the rest with ease. Into the second lap Ashcroft assumed control tailed by Kershaw, with Cullen dropping back to third and this was how they finished with Ashcrofts win securing the Title ahead of Kershaw. With George Speakman, the 3rd member of the team missing through injury, the team secured Bronze medal in the team event to cap off a successful season for the group.

Gold Medallist Ben Ashcroft in action alongside silver medallist Jimmy Kershaw of Oswestry.

With the U11 boys facing a 19 point deficit behind Oswestry in bronze medal position, the team had a clear target to aim for, and to a man they raced superbly with massive improvements in placings and a team placing of second on the day. Harry Dowley has been a revalation in his two races, with consecutive 5th placings to again lead his new team. Backed up by Lloyd Humphries and Joe Timmis in 10th and 11th place, the aim of closing in on Oswestry was clearly relished. Rhys Humphries and Fergus Stevens completed the scoring for a great team run, but on the final count this team effort came up agonisingly short of overtaking the Oswestry team.

The final race of the day was the u13boys, with Shrewsbury sitting comfortably in silver medal position behind another dominant Telford team in an unasailable gold position. Great supportive team running in each fixture has seen the boys score well, with todays race possibly the best of their season. Luke Howes led the charge through the first lap, closely checked by Stuart Duff and Ross Kirby, with Freddie Turner in close contention. Duff, running his best race took control in the final quarter and picked the pace up with Howes sticking by. Kirby and Turner had dropped back slighlty, but as the final 300m drew close, a massive shake up was about to unfold. Kirby, fresh from a 6th place in the North Wales League the day before, saw his strong finish bring Duff, Howes and two Wenlock Athletes back, and a strong kick propelled him from 10th to finish 6th. Howes edged out Duff by a second for 8th & 9th, with Turner just behind comfortably in 11th place.

U13Boys Silver Medallists; Stuart Duff, Ross Kirby, Freddie Turner, Luke Howes. (Missing is Tom Turner)

Consistency throughout the season of the boys team has been rewarded with 2 team medals and Ashcrofts individual title. The core of the U11boys will again be eligible for U11 competition next season which has real potential for continued improvement on the basis of what they have achieved this year.

Many thanks to all athletes who have competed so well over the 4 fixtures, and to the support from parents, family & friends.
