SAC Running Report 23/5/11
The second race in the Telford Athletic Club Sexarathon Series has
taken place, with ten runners from Shrewsbury Athletic Club competing.
Steve Cale, currently one of the County’s top fell runners, quickly
adapted to the fast flat grass course in his first Sexarathon race for
the Club, storming to 3rd place in 16/05, with Kevin Francis,
challenging for honours in the Series veteran over 45 category, putting
in an impressive display in 15th place and 2nd in the age category in
17/35.
Next home for the Club, Claire Burgoyne continued to go from strength
to strength, finishing 25th in 18/15, an improvement of some 30 places
and one and a half minutes on last year, achieving 1st place in the
Senior Ladies category and looking set to retain that title from last
year.
The first two fixtures of the Summer Fell Race Series have taken place,
with the staging of the Wrekin Streak and Caradoc Classic Fell Races.
At the Wrekin race, Ian Howarth, the Club’s current top road runner,
proved to be equally at home on the hills in his first Shropshire fell
race, achieving 3rd place in 18/37, with Kevin Francis 14th and 2nd
Veteran over 45 in 20/28 and Steve Turk, now almost back to full
fitness and challenging the Club’s fell running elite , in 24th place
and 4th Veteran over 40 in 21/28.
At the Caradoc Race, Kevin Francis lead the side home in 15th place and
4th in the Veteran over 45 category in 26/50, with Steve Turk 23rd and
6th Veteran over 40 in 27/35 and Club captain Graham Jones 26th and 2nd
Veteran over 55 in 27/58.
Steve Cale and Ian Howarth travelled to West Wales to compete in the
Ras y Diafol Race, a demanding 17 mile multi terrain event, part of the
Red Kite Challenge Weekend, with Steve the comfortable race winner in
1hour 53mins 55secs and Ian, showing no after effects from his
excellent London Marathon performance, second in 2hours 3mins 10secs.
Meanwhile, Welsh international Anna Bartlett was also on her travels,
competing in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Race, involving ascents of each
of the Yorkshire Dales National Park peaks, Pen-y Ghent, Ingleborough
and Whernside, a total of 24 miles and 5279 feet of ascent, finishing
18th in the Ladies’ Race and 6th in the Female Veteran over 40 category
in 4hours 5mins 18secs.
Two runners competed in the Market Drayton 10K Race, with impressive
results, Sean Hickey 150th in 45/08 and Duncan Rose 168th and 4th
Veteran over 55 in 45/21, out of a field of over 950 runners.
