Mountain Running Report

Shrewsbury Athletic Club’s talented fell runner and Welsh
International, Anna Bartlett has been concentrating her efforts
recently outside the County, on the International mountain running
scene and English Fell Running Championships. On the International
scene, she was once again selected to run for Wales in the World Long
Distance Mountain Running Challenge in Slovenia, continuing her
excellent form, finishing 28th in the Womens’ Race and helping Wales to
6th place in the Womens’ Team event, over the 37.5 kilometre
mountainous course.

In the English Championships, the series comprising six races in the
North of England, varying in length from 5 to 18 miles and in ascent
from 2500 feet to 6000 feet, after three races at Morley Clough in the
South West Pennines, the Long Mynd Valleys Race and Duddon Valley in
Cumbria, she had been in 17th place in the Womens’ Series, before a
long standing lower back injury resulted in her not being able to take
part in the most recent event at Loughrigg in the Lake District, and
she is now undergoing physiotherapy.

SAC Running Report 4/7/11
Runners from Shrewsbury Athletic Club produced one of their best
displays to date, with three finishers in the top five, when they
competed in the Ironbridge 4 Mile Race, part of the Telford Sexarathon
Race Series. The trio of Ian Howarth, Steve Cale and Pete Middleton
were in outstanding form, as the three road and fell stars combined in
a rare appearance together to finish 2nd, 4th and 5th respectively.
Kevin Francis maintained his challenge in the Veteran over 45 category
with 15th spot in the race, while Ben Calder, in 36th place, is making
a similar challenge in the Veteran over 35 category.
Claire Burgoyne continued her outstanding season, with another 1st
Senior Woman placing in 25th place overall, improving almost 30 places
from last year’s event. Despite finishing 1st Senior Woman in last
year’s Series,she has still significantly improved her placings and
times in every Sexarathon race this season and certainly looks set to
retain her title.
On the fells, Dan Fleetwood lead the side home in the Rodney’s Pillar
Race in 19th place, with Sean Hickey 25th, Phil Whittall 32nd and Adam
Stockwell 37th.
In the Pontesbury Hill Race, Ian Howarth continued his successful fell
season, finishing in 6th place, with Kevin Francis 11th and 4th Veteran
over 45 and Steve Turk 13th and 1st Veteran over 40. Both Francis and
Turk are currently 2nd in their respective categories with two races to
go.
