Shrewsbury Athletic Club remain in Division 4

Shrewsbury Athletic Club’s senior track and field team secured their place in division 4 of the Midland Athletics league again for next season after a strong performance at their final fixture at Banbury at the weekend. Despite being placed 3rd in the league, remaining in the division could not be guaranteed unless they finish above their nearest competitors.

The club started well with the hurdles races with Andrew Beeston and Matthew Brown finishing well followed on the track by middle distance runners Tim Pillow and Jason Howes. Howard Stringer equalled his seasons best finishing second in the 400m. In the field events Sam Edwards won both triple and long jumps and was well supported by and Ryan Kelly in both events. The throws events were completed by Peter Duckers, Anthony Evans and Simon Brown, who recorded a seasons best in the Shot Putt.

Shrewsbury’s women were in fine form again, with Anna Kelly, Hannah Bridgwater and Beckie Houston, scoring well in the jumps. In the sprints Libby Naylor racing over the 400m for the first time and Jo Brook recorded a Seasons Bests in the 200m with Zoe Green, Pat Higgins, Kirsten Brown and Elaine Jebb participating in the throws. In the final event, the 400m relay, Emma Pullen ran the race of the day for the women. Emma, who made her Television debut last month in the final of the 400m at the World Trials in Birmingham produced a stunning leg of the race, starting some 50metres behind the leading runners, passing both to give club captain Claire Burgoyne a 20metre lead, which she held onto, to bring them home in first place, to round off a very successful day for the team.

Shrewsbury finished in third place on the day to secure 3rd place in the league, to remain at this level of competition, a real success for the club following two successive promotions.
