NATIONAL YOUNG ATHLETES LEAGUE
Young Shrewsbury athletes combined with athletes from Oswestry Olympians to compete as a composite team in the second meeting of the National Young Athletes League held at Telford Athletics Stadium.
An excellent turn out of athletes and some outstanding performances meant that the Oswestry/Shrewsbury team acquitted themselves very well against tough opposition from Telford, Wrexham, Cannock and Stafford, Tipton and Tamworth to finish in third place overall with a total of 544.5 points.
Top Shrewsbury performance came from Under 13 Francesca Scott who achieved two Grade One performances in the 70m Hurdles – 12.1 secs and 75m – 10.4 secs.

Under 13 Girls: Francesca Scott – 1st 70m Hurdles (A) 12.1 secs (Grade 1), 2nd 75m (A) 10.4secs (Grade 1), 1st Shot (B) 5m 06. Eleanor Fox – 1st 70m Hurdles (B) 12.9secs (Grade 4), 1st Shot (A) 7m 06 (Grade 4), 3rd 150m (B) 22.6 secs. Jessica Clarkson – 1st Long Jump (A) 4m 18 (Grade 4). Katie Dixon – 3rd 75m (B) 11.4secs.
Under 13 Boys: James Yewbrey – 1st 100m (A) 13.4 secs (Grade 3), 1st Long Jump (A) 4m 57 (Grade 3). Harry Bower – 2nd 200m (A) 29.8. Fergus Stevens – 1st 1500m (B) 5m.07.3 (Grade 4). Henry Williams – 3rd Shot (A) 6m 74.
Under 15 Girls: Hollie Williamson – 1st 75m Hurdles (A) 12.0 (Grade 1), 1st Long Jump (A) 4m 89 (Grade 2), 1st High Jump (A) 1m 50 (Grade 2). Izzy Lewington – 2nd Discus (B) 13m 67, 3rd 100m (B) 14.2, 3rd Shot (B)5m 39. Daisy Barnes – 3rd Discus (A) 15m 17, 4th Shot (A) 5m 57. Jordan Hall – 4th 200m (A) 28.8. Sally Joyce – 4th 800m (A) 2m 46.1.
Under 15 Boys: Hamish McCartney – 1st 80m Hurdles (B)16.1, 2nd Discus (B) 11m 64. Tom Turner – 3rd High Jump (A) 1m 30, 4th 100m (B) 15.0. Ross Kirby – 4th 1500m (A) 4m 45.4 (Grade 4).
Under 17 Men: George Speakman – 1st Triple Jump (A) 12m 82 (Grade 2). Jason Glennester -2nd 400m (B) 60.0, 4th 800m (A) 2m 15.3. Jack Bower – 2nd Long Jump (B) 4m 88, 4th 100m (A) 12.2, 4th 200m (A) 24.7.
4x100 Relays: The Under 13 Girls team – Jessica Clarkson, Katie Dixon, Eleanor Fox, Francesca Scott and the Under 15 Girls team, including Jordan Hall, Izzy Lewington and Hollie Williamson – both came first overall.
The final league fixture is at Wrexham on 17th June.
SHROPSHIRE AA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
There was success for Shrewsbury AC athletes at the Shropshire AA Track and Field Championships held at Telford Athletics Stadium.
There were Championship Records for Claire Burgoyne in the Senior Womens 800m – 2m 13.5secs and Sam Edwards in the Senior Mens Triple Jump – 13m 80 cms.
Two of the younger club athletes, Hollie Williamson and James Yewbrey, put in outstanding performances to come away with three gold medals each.
In the Under 13 age group, James took gold in the Long Jump – 4m 62, 100m – 13.4secs and 200m – 28.0secs. Hollie won the Under 15 Girls High Jump with a leap of 1m 62cms. She also won the Long Jump – 5m 06cms and the 75m Hurdles – 12.4secs.
Two Under 11 athletes won medals. Elin Rugman was 3rd in the 150m – 27.2secs and Sam Bosworth took two bronze medals, in the 600m -2m 07.9 and Cricket Ball Throw -30m 34cms.
Eleanor Fox took gold in the Under 13 Girls 70m Hurdles in a time of 12.7secs and reached the final of the 100m – 14.8secs. Katie Dixon reached the final of the 100m – 14.9secs and Megan Potts was 5th in the 800m – 2m 45.9secs. Harry Bower took silver in the Under 13 Boys 200m – 29.6secs and was 5th in the final of the 100m – 14.6secs.
Jordan Hall finished in 2nd place in the Under 15 Girls 200m – 28.2secs.
In the Under 17 age group George Speakman won two medals – gold in the Triple Jump -12m 79cms and silver in the Long Jump – 5m 60. Jack Bower won silver in the 200m in a time of 24.7secs and finished 4th in the 100m – 12.2 secs.
Libby Naylor won the Junior Womens 400m Hurdles – 74.8 secs and Hannah Bridgwater was 2nd in the 100m Hurdles -17.6secs. Howard Stringer took gold in the Junior Mens 200m -23.7secs and 400m -53.6 secs.
Andrew Beeston took silver in the Senior Mens 800m – 2m 06.3secs and Pat Higgins won the veteran Womens Hammer -25m 05.

Fell Running Update - Fell Man Turk
Runners from Shrewsbury Athletic Club have competed in the first events
in the Telford Sexarathon and Summer Fell Series in Shropshire and the
Spring Treble Challenge Series in Staffordshire.
Club fell specialist, Steve Turk rose to the Spring Treble Challenge, a
series of three challenging off road races on the Staffordshire
moorlands, finishing 10th in the Hanchurch Hilly event in 32/34, 8th in
the Milford Murder event in 37/37 and 6th in the Darlaston Ups and
Downs event in 33/11, achieving 6th place overall and top spot in the
Mens' over 40 category for the Series. In the Hanchurch Hilly, Steve
Waters was 11th in 32/36 and Chris Wakeman 35th in 36/30.
The Telford Sexarathon Series got under way with the staging of the
Lilleshall 5 Mile Race in Telford. Steve Waters, unable to compete in
the 2011 Series through injury, made an excellent comeback, leading the
squad home in 34th place in 31/04. He was followed by Tim Smith, 46th
and 7th in the Over 40 category in 31/59, with Chris Wakeman 66th and
8th in the over 50 category in 33/41. Emma Sheekey finished 170th and
4th in the Female over 40 category in 41/42.
The Wrekin Streak, the first in the Summer fell Series, was staged in
some of the event's worst conditions of wind and rain, but undeterred,
Dan Croft had an outstanding run, finishing 9th in 20/24 and 3rd
Veteran over 45, with Dom Kirby 16th in 21/41 and son Ross, 2nd in the
Under 16 category in 23/55 while achieving a highly creditable 43rd
place in the senior event of over 100 runners.
