Having left a snow-less Shrewsbury an hour earlier, they arrived at the venue to find the race route of undulating forest trails covered in ice and snow and a warm up near the start line confirmed that the conditions underfoot were treacherous.

With the usual downhill slope from the start line considered too dangerous, the start was moved a short distance and the race started with a short uphill followed by a frantic 2 mile downhill stretch in which Dom, Steve and Steve placed themselves well towards the front of the 210 strong field. The remaining 6 miles comprised some testing hills particularly in the last mile with a long, uphill drag towards the finish as well as some tricky underfoot conditions. Dom Kirby and Steve Turk ran strongly throughout with the in-form Dom finishing 9th in 51.35 and Steve 12th in 53.27. Steve Waters gave an improved performance on his recent cross-country outings finishing 16th in 54.33 and Chris Wakeman put in a decent performance, 37th in 59.14.

After the race, the guys attended the presentation and were delighted to come away with a haul of prizes, Steve Turk claiming 1st in the V40 category, before Dom picked up his prize for a top 10 finish. The trio of Dom, Steve and Steve were then presented with 1st in the Senior Men's Team category, which was a pleasant surprise and bonus given that they were not aware that there was a team competition during the race itself. All in all a decent day out for Shrewsbury AC.

SHROPSHIRE SPORTSHALL LEAGUE.

SHROPSHIRE SPORTSHALL LEAGUE.

Young Shrewsbury athletes travelled to Oswestry to compete in the final meeting of the Shropshire Sportshall league.

Shrewsbury were able to field full teams of Under 11 Girls and Boys and Under 13 Girls at Oswestry. Another dominant team display saw all scorers in the top 10 for the fourth time this series. Making it to the start line with only seconds to spare, Leo Walton took the race on with team-mate William Davies at the front. A great uphill sprint finish saw Leo steal 2nd place, with Will next up in 4th and with it a very well earned Individual Silver medal. Fergus Stevens again notched 5th place, with ever improving Archie Hale bagging his fourth consecutive 8th place to secure top team on the day, and with it SAC won the U11 Title for the first time.

This season has seen the team improve in each race, and after the standards set from the U11boys the rest of the team showed strong competitiveness and endurance as the weather turned to blustery winter showers.

In the next two races, Shrewsbury were only able to field one athlete in each, but both Freddie Turner (U13boys), and Sasha Gardiner (U15girls), had their best finishes of the campaign. Sasha had the added pressure from a trio of Shrewsbury High athletes in tow throughout , but managed to shake off all challenges to come home a great 7th place.

As the first rain fell, Freddie took to the start line and clearly enjoying the tough conditions raced his best of the season. A strong 8th placing was reward for Freddies efforts over the technical hill section where he put distance between himself and the pack of athletes covering 9th-13th places.

Next up to secure team accolades were the U17boys team, with George Speakman & Ryan Cullen taking home a well earned Team Silver with another strong run. The longest race of the day had the lads work well as a duo throughout, as they pursued their Oswestry & Telford rivals in the rain. George 5th & Ryan 6th were good enough for third place on the day, and a comfortable team silver with Ben Ashcroft absent.

Showing no signs of fatigue from racing in the North Wales XC league the previous day, Ross Kirby & Stuart Duff took on the two lap challenge in the U15’s fixture. Taking the race on from the off, Ross set to disrupt the dominance of Telford and led the field through lap one, and responded to each challenge Telford could throw at him. Stuart had settled into a nice tempo within a group of 4 athletes, his efficiency helping him separate from the group to come in 13th. At the head of the field Kirby showed no signs of let up, with the lead trio relishing the battle in the driving wind & rain. Still in contention as the hills were tackled for the second time, it was only as they returned to the fields that Ross was separated as the lead Telford athletes worked away together. A seasons best 3rd place for Kirby was jusr reward for his efforts.

For the final race all eyes were on Katharine Smith, who had already bagged individual Silver medal with 2nd place finishes in the previous three fixtures. Another 2nd place here in much the same style as seen before, with Katharines easy running style making light work of all surfaces. A lead group of three headed into the hill section, where series winner Eva Wade (Telford) made her move to pull clear. Katharine was joined shoulder to shoulder by a Shrewsbury High School athlete hoping to finally break Katharines run of form. Much to Smiths credit, her focus was unwavering and she systematically increased the pace on the flatter sections to edge clear and make 2nd place very much her own.

(Katharine Smith 2nd U13girl with the Champion U11boys team, Leo Walton, William Davies (also 2nd U11boy) & Fergus Stevens. Missing, Archie Hale, Harry Bower, Joshua & Oliver Lewis)

The boys team were good enough to secure overall 3rd place in the team standings to illustrate the growing strength of the endurance team. Focus over the festive season now moves to the County Championships at Lilleshall where County selection places are at stake.

SAC Running Report 28/11/11

It was a case of mixed fortunes for Shrewsbury Athletic Club when they
competed in the third fixture of the North Wales Cross Country League
on a new course at the Glyndwr University campus at Northrop, Deeside.
Ongoing injury and availability problems resulted in just seven club
runners competing in the Mens' race, and the team having to settle for
5th place on the day, although maintaining 1st place in the Male
Masters category.
The more encouraging signs were the return to fitness of club stalwarts
Kevin Francis and Club Captain Graham Jones, with Francis improving in
the finishing order with each race, leading the side home in 26th place
and Jones, edging out club colleagues Steve Turk and Dom Kirby in 41st
and 52nd places after the three changed positions in a close fought
race.

The Womens' team, on the other hand, is now going from strength to
strength, spearheaded by the arrival of Amanda Wright-Smith, who
followed up her recent victory in the Mad Jack's Race with a storming
3rd place at Northrop, forming a formidable partnership with the Club's
Welsh International, Anna Bartlett, who finished 6th. Another good run from Ellis with even paced laps saw her move through the field as others tired in, with Ellis securing 35th spot in the U11Girls race.

The strongest team this season has been the U11boys, and with 7 runners out today it was another great team performance as the the boys again dominated the team competition winning today by a massive 34 points and are now leading the way in the race for Under 11 Boys team trophy.
Fergus Stevens who has been superbly consistent this year stole the show, and the race, with an expertly timed sprint finish to move from third place to first past the post with only meters to spare. The next 3 scorers ran just as strongly and scored heavily, with William Davies 6th, Leo Walton 7th and Archie Hale 8th grouping together to ensure another top team performance. Harry Bower in 15th, debutants Joshua Lewis 17th and younger brother Oliver Lewis 22nd completed the Shrewsbury finishers adding strength to the team.

(U11boys team start, from left; Fergus Stevens, Leo Walton, William Davies, Archie Hale, Joshua Lewis, Oliver Lewis, Harry Bower)

Running this season as the only U15G SAC athlete, Sasha Gardiner has put together a string of consistent runs in her first season with the club. Today was another showing of Sashas sensible pace judgement as yet again she moved through in the latter stages for 11th place.

In the U13boys, Freddie Turner was in the same situation as Sasha, being the only club athlete to take to the start line. Freddie had his best finish of the season in a very good 10th, clearly the climb up toward the iconic Windmill Hill suited him as he comfortably separated himself from a chasing pairing of athletes.

A trio of U17boys took to the field for the first time this season, as George Speakman returned from injury to join Ben Ashcroft & Ryan Cullen. For the first 3 flat laps the lads were closely bunched, working off each other, but as they took to the hill for the first time Ben Ashcroft pulled away to keep in touch with the lead group. George, having a strong run was next up with Ryan just behind, the order not changing as the lads attacked the hill for the second time. The scoring was enough to secure winning team on the day with the finishing positions of Ben 4th, George 6th & Ryan in 7th. A confidence building result to take forward to the season finale at Bridgnorth.

Only 2 SAC athletes made it for the U15boys, with Ross Kirby and Stuart Duff both having raced strongly in the North Wales XC League the previous day (9th and 11th places), again taking to the start line to complete a busy weekend for the lads. Demonstrating a calm approach to the race, their endurance and pace judgement enabled them to secure strong positions and again pick off tiring competitors for 9th (Kirby), and 14th place (Duff).

Katharine Smith graced the final race of the day, and with the majority of her team-mates staying on to support her efforts, she again ran superbly well for her third 2nd place finish of the season. Running in pursuit of the Telford leader, Katharine has had to contend with pressure from the chasing pack all season, but has beaten off all challengers at every attack to secure 2nd in the individual standings with a race to spare.

(Katharine Smith attacks the climb)

A top team performance from all age groups today, Shrewsbury AC will travel to the final SYAL fixture at Bridgnorth on 4th December in high spirits, and with a number of Athletes in contention for individual as well as team awards. We'd like to encourage as many as possible to come and run for the club in all age groups at Bridgnorth

Congratulations also go to the following athletes for selection to the Shropshire Schools Cross Country team for an inter-county fixture at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on Saturday 19th November:

Katharine Smith,

Ross Kirby,

Ben Ashcroft,

Ryan Cullen

Sportshall League report

SHROPSHIRE SPORTSHALL LEAGUE

There was an improved turn out of Shrewsbury athletes at the second meeting of the Shropshire Sportshall League held at Much Wenlock Leisure Centre.

The club was able to field full teams in the Under 11 Girls and Boys and the Under 13 Girls age groups. Injuries to key team members resulted in
just eight runners travelling to compete in the mens' event and club
captain Graham Jones having to pull out after two of the four laps
through injury. Duncan Beales led the side home in 29th place, followed
by the in form Steve Turk in 35th place, and Kevin Francis, still not
fully fit after fracturing his arm in the Snowdon Race, further than
usual down the finishing order in 41st place. The mens' team dropped to
4th place, although the Masters' team finished 1st.
Jack Francis was 9th in the Under 17 race, while Emma Sheekey finished
54th and Sheila Richards 75th in the Womens' race.

It was a similarly depleted squad that travelled to the second fixture
at St David's College, Llandudno. Kevin Francis' improving fitness
resulted in his leading the side home in 32nd place, then Steve Turk
and Dom Kirby had a close tussle, resulting in 46th and 47th places
respectively, Graham Jones completed the course without injury in 63rd
place and Chris Wakeman and Steve Oliver were separated only by a
sprint finish, in 104th and 105th places. Anna Bartlett returned to
spearhead the womens' team, in 5th place, with Emma Sheekey 83rd and
Sheila Richards 106th.

Bangor Results:
Men: 29 Duncan Beales 32/55, 35 Steve Turk 33/12, 41 Kevin Francis
33/19, 46 Dom Kirby 33/44, 86 Steve Oliver 37/53, 111 Derek Owen 41/19,
119 Adam Stockwell 42/32.
Under 17: 9 Jack Francis 20/18

Llandudno Results:
Men: 32 Kevin Francis, 46 Steve Turk, 47 Dom Kirby, 63 Graham Jones,
104 Chris Wakeman, 105 Steve Oliver, 152 Derek Owen, 163 Adam Stockwell.

There was better news for the Club on the fell running scene, with Anna
Bartlett back approaching her best form, just in time to be selected to
run for Wales in the Commonwealth Mountain Running Championships at
Llanberis. Bartlett had an outstanding race, finishing 11th in 47/58 in
the 8 kilometre womens'race from Llanberis to the top of Moel Eilio and
back, 2nd finisher in the Welsh team, helping them to 3rd place in the
team event. Ross Kirby competed for the Club in the under 14 Boys Home
Countries Championship Mountain Race at the same venue, producing one
of his best displays, finishing 4th in 22/02.

In the Breiddens Race, Bartlett led the club home in 17th place and 1st
Lady finisher in 1/03/26, with Steve Turk 20th and 5th Veteran over 40
in 1/03/58, Duncan Beales 40th in 1/09/31 and Gordon Trevor 145th and
6th Veteran over 60 in 1/45/34.

Steve Oliver travelled to the Cardiff Half Marathon, where he finished
in 667th place in the field of over 10,800 runners in 1/34/43.

SYAL Cross Country report - Oswestry 16th October

A strong team performance from Shrewsbury AC’s young athletes in the second Cross Country fixture of the season, bouyed by a much better turnout this time around.

Ellis Spencer & Nicole Allen made their first outings for the team in the days first event, the U11girls, and tackled the tough course well for 28th & 29th place finishes respectively.

Reaping the benefit of having a full team out, the superb U11boys team built on their strong opener and ran away comfortable team winners by a clear 27 point margin. Harry Bower returned to the team and debutant Leo Walton joined the strong pairing of William Davies and Fergus Stephens. A procession of SAC vests was at the fore of the action from the off and despite a fast pace they remained in contention throughout. Led home by Harry in 2nd, William 3rd, Fergus 5th and Leo in 7th position, the club dominated the top 10 and scored heavily to bring the team back into medal contention for the remaining fixtures.

Another young athlete showing consistently strong form is Katharine Smith where she was the lone SAC athlete in the u13 girls race.
Repeating her 2nd place from Newport, this was a tougher challenge as the 3rd and 4th placed athletes both took turns to challenge Katherine for her position. She’d led the field in pursuit of Telford’s runaway winner, and showed mental toughness to lead the pursuing athletes before pulling clear to a well earned second placing.

Freddie Turner moved up on his 16th place from last time to come home 12th. A well paced first lap was followed up with a stronger second lap as Freddie worked his way through the field as others around him tired.

Sasha Gardiner was another athlete to run as sole SAC athlete, and she managed to put in a good showing for 10th place on this more challenging course. Similar to many of her team-mates, her endurance came to the fore to move up the positions in the final lap for another good performance.

Our U15 boys fielded a full team for the first time this season, with Luke Howes returning to the side. This is a particularly strong competition, and the lads competed well, running as a team throughout the 2 and a half lap course. Led by Ross Kirby in 12th, Luke close behind in 13th and Stuart Duff in 14th the team score was only a single point off 3rd place which was secured
by Wenlock Olympians.

Ben Ashcroft returned from illness to join Ryan Cullen in the U17 fixture with both athletes running strongly in the 5k distance.
As the pace picked up our lads worked strongly together to stay in touch, with Ryan first home for the club in 6th and Ben 7th to finish on equal team points with Wrekin College Triathlon.

Hopefully we can build on this team showing, and with similar numbers out next time, really push teams into medal positions and consolidate the individual peformances too.

Next fixture is at Much Wenlock, November 13th.

Sportshall League Round-up

Shropshire Sportshall League

The first meeting of the Shropshire Sportshall league was held at Bridgnorth Leisure Centre.

Unfortunately there was a disappointing turn out of Shrewsbury athletes, especially in the Under 11 Boys age group where only two boys competed on the day.

Leading Shrewsbury AC results were as follows:

Under 11 Girls: Jodie Adams – 1st 4 Laps (A) 48.9 secs. Fergus Stevens continued on from last year in fine form in 5th place & Archie Hale another athlete demonstrating a ferocious kick to steal 3 places in the run for 8th meant all our athletes were well inside the top 10, a great result.

Only Freddie Turner made the start line in club colours for U13 race, as the majority of last seasons team moved up to u15 level. A fast paced race split the field early on, and Freddie managed to tag onto a good sized group to keep involved, ending up with a 16th place finish.

Two of those athletes to move up an age group took to the start line in the U15’s event. With both Ross Kirby and Stuart Turner having come of good track seasons, they both equitted themselves well over 4000m. This was another faced pace race, with Ross and Stuart positioning in the second group and making their moves in the latter stages of lap one. Ross split this group and ran clear to finish 9th, with Stuart competing strongly to earn a good 13th place.

Ryan Cullen was the sole club athlete to run in the U17s over 5000m, again moving up an age group. A strong 5th place was good reward for Ryans effort.

Sasha Gardner’s 9th place in the U15 was another impressive performance for her first outing in club colours.
