Fine Results for Junior Athletes at Shropshire Schools

Junior Athletics in Shropshire continues to go from strength to strength, with a number of fine recent performances from our athletes at recent events including the National Under 20 Championships and Shropshire Schools.

Iris Downes competed with great success at the England Athletics National Under 20 Championships in Bedford over the weekend of 19/20 June. Racing the 800m several years ahead of her age group at just 15 years old, Iris qualified 2nd in her heat with a time of 2:12.50, before going on to run 2:12.43 in the final to finish a brilliant 4th overall. This is a great result at a national level, congratulations to Iris, her family and her coaches. Also at the National Under 20s Brad Davies-Pughe, formerly coached by Pat Higgins at SAC but now a Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier, won Gold in the Long Jump with a PB of 7.56m to secure qualification for the European Championships in Estonia this summer. Good luck Brad, everyone in Shrewsbury is behind you.

Shrewsbury Athletic Club young athletes also competed at the Shropshire Schools championships on Saturday 19 June with good results. Many of the athletes were competing for the first time after joining the club after lockdown relaxation. Emily Hall finished 5th in the 100m junior girl’s event in a PB of 14.7 seconds. Beth Trow, who is improving with every race, finished a superb 1st in the 800m in a time of 2.26.7 the same category followed by Savanah Hughes in 10th in a PB of 2.56.7. Beth is having a great summer, this was her third win of the week after winning the Up The Nab Inter Counties fell race championship in Glossop and an 800m at Nuneaton in a time of 2.22.07.

In the Under 17 category 800m Rosie Morris finished a pleasing 3rd in 2.41.0, followed by Bo Ball in a time of 2.44.0 a PB and Georgina Trow in 2.49.0, another PB. In her final school’s competition Jess Gunner finished 2nd in the under 20 1500m in 5.28. Jess is now going on to university. Having represented the club with great distinction through her junior years we wish Jess luck for the future.

At U15 level Poppy Thomas put the shot out to 9.17m to become County Champion and set a new Championship record.

There were also a number of good results for the boys. In the Under 15s 1500m Jack Kinrade continued his recent winning ways with a 1st place in 4.18.9, closely followed by new member Joe Leahy behind him in 4.42.7 for 3rd place. Jack Kinrade’s race also won him the performance of the day award. In the Under 15 800m Zac Westenay, another runner new to the club, surprised himself with 3rd place in 2.29.3. Ethan Stanway led the Under 17 boys to a first place in the 400m in a time of 56.6. George Andrews in his first ever race in the Under 17 age group 800m finished 8th in 2.25.7. Dan Newman on his debut finished 9th in a time of 5.28.0. Joe Gilling, like Jess Gunner in his final year for the English schools, finished 1st in the Under 20s 1500m.

Charlie Huntley (U20 male) spun the discus out to 15.77m (6th) and set a PB of 27.28m for 4th place with the javelin. U15 boy Harry Heard (Oswestry Olympian coached at SAC) set PB's to become County Champion in both the shot (9.31m) and javelin (33.32m).

Most of the athletes’ train with the Club Endurance group on Monday Evenings and their next goal is the County Championships in July. All abilities train together led by qualified coaches providing an enjoyable environment to improve their athletic ability.

Our Junior throwers have also been competing with distinction across the region. At the Telford Spring Warm-Up event there were victories for Manon Closs in the Under 13 Girls Javelin with a PB of 15.60m, Poppy Thomas in the Under 15 Girls Shot with a throw of 9.32m and Harry Heard in the Under 15 Boys with a Javelin PB of 28.67m and a Shot PB of 9.02m. Harry, who trains with SAC but is a member of Oswestry Olympians, went on to improve those throws with a Javelin of 30.63m for 1st place and a Shot of 9.21m for 3rd place at the Trafford Medal Meet.

At the Shropshire Schools Championships Poppy Thomas put the shot out to 9.17m to become County Champion and claim the Championship Record. While Harry Heard set PB's on his way to taking gold medals in both the shot (9.32m) and javelin (33.32m).

The Club's sprinters also came home from the Shropshire Schools Championsips with an impressive medal haul. Congratulations to:
