North Wales XC League - Walford College Report

26 Apr 2016

It proved to be a memorable day when Shrewsbury Athletic Club hosted the penultimate fixture of the North Wales Cross Country League at Walford College, Baschurch on Saturday. Although it was the first time in over 20 years that the Shrewsbury club had hosted a North Wales fixture, the organisation and traditional cross country course, organised in partnership with and with kind permission of Walford and North Shropshire College, drew praise from many of the competitors. Most memorable, however, was the Club record turnout for a North Wales cross country of 21 Men and 7 Women. The Mens' team were 1st on the day, maintaining their lead at the top of the Division with one fixture to go, while the Womens' team were propelled by their new arrivals to 2nd place team across both Womens' Divisions, despite being in Division 2.

The Mens' squad was ably lead home through some of the the muddiest conditions experienced this season, by Gabe Morris in 6th place, with Michael Betts 11th, then Simon Adney and Neil O'Hanlon 12th and 13th in their first North Wales cross country for the Club. Adam Roberts in 14th and James Hickinbottom in 17th rounded off the scoring six. The Womens' team were lead home by new arrival Sara Willhoit in 3rd place, edging out Welsh International Anna Bartlett in the home straight in 4th place, with new arrival Lauren Morley in 22nd place.

The final fixture in the Series will take place at Oswestry on Saturday 6th February, with the Club hoping for a similar turnout, in addition to a welcome appearance by Pete Middleton, to ensure a succesful conclusion to the Series.
