A Shrewsbury Athletic Club team of Veteran runners have finished 5th in the British Masters Cross Country Relays at Long Eaton, Derbyshire in the Veteran Over 55 Race. The relay comprised 4 x 3Km legs, with the team of Graham Jones 12/15, Martin Hargreaves 12/03, Haydn Jones 12/51 and Richard Jones 13/52 not only finishing 5th in the country, but having two of the team, Martin Hargreaves 5th and Graham Jones 9th in the top ten fastest times.

 

The Club's junior athletes have produced some impressive individual and team performances in the opening two fixtures of the Shropshire Young Athletes Cross Country League at Lilleshall and Shrewsbury. At Lilleshall, the Under 13 Girls team finished 1st in their age category and comprised Bethany Trow 6/32, Lucy Newall 6/50,Savannah Hughes 7/44 and Katie Jones 8/26, the Under 13 Boys Team finished 1st equal and comprised Jack Kinrade 9/59, Adam Bentham 10/29, Freddie Allwood 10/57 and Zach Mckenna 11/04 and the Under 11 Girls Team finished 2nd and comprised Chloe Stuart 6/55, Ava Homer 6/56, Maisie Bennett 7/32 and Harlow Hughes 8/00. Individual podium places went to Joe Gilling 1st Under 17 Boys, Bethany Trow 1st Under 13 Girls and Adam Edwards 3rd Under 15 Boys.

 

At Shrewsbury, where there were many improved performances, the Under 13 Girls Team made it two wins in a row and comprised Bethany Trow 7/30, Lucy Newall 7/53, Savannah Hughes 8/37 and Jess Turner 9/27, the Under 13 Boys Team finished 2nd and comprised Adam Bentham 10/16, Zach Mckenna 10/47, Monty Oliver 11/04 and Will Griffiths 11/55 and the Under 11 Girls Team finished 2nd and comprised Ava Homer 5/33, Chloe Stuart 5/40, Maisie Bennett 5/56 and Harlow Hughes 6/04. The Under 11 Boys Team finished 4th and comprised Ralph Brown 5/32, Joseph Walters 5/33, Freddie Taylor 5/43 and Rio Fitton 6/03, the Under 15 Boys Team finished 4th and comprised Adam Edwards 13/13 and Jude Lins 13/36, Under 15 Girls Team Georgia Trow 12/48, Under 17 Boys Team Joe Gilling 18/14 and Under 17 Girls Team Jess Gunner 19/47. Individual podium places went to Adam Edwards 1st Under 15 Boys, Bethany Trow 1st Under 13 Girls, Jude Lins 2nd Under 15 Boys, Lucy Newall 2nd Under 13 Girls and Adam Bentham 3rd Under 13 Boys. On the day and after two races, the Boys' Teams were 2nd and the Girls' Teams 3rd overall.

 

Gill Evans achieved international success, travelling to Belgium to compete in the Bruges Half Marathon, part of the Great Bruges Marathon Event attracting over 6000 competitors from all over the world, finishing 1st Lady Veteran Over 55 in 54th place in the Womens' Race in 1/42/31 in a field of over 1000 runners.

 

Two new Club signings made their debut races in Club colours, Paul Bowes finished 20th and 3rd Veteran Over 50 in the Clwydian Hills Fell Race in 1/36/25 while Jon Bowie finished 75th and 3rd Veteran Over 40 in a personal best time of 31/09 in the Leeds Abbey Dash 10K Race, with Club colleague Matt Hall 116th also in a personal best time of 31/58.

 

In off road races, Matt Hall finished 22nd in the Cardiff Cross Challenge in 31/55 running against some of the Country's best cross country runners, while in the Breiddens Hill Race, part of the Shropshire Winter Hill Series, Andrew Birch finished 22nd and 3rd Veteran Over 45 in 1/08/32, with Andy Lewis 89th in 1/27/33 and Gill Evans 92nd and 3rd Lady Veteran Over 55 in 1/28/01.

 

Two Club runners knocked over 10 minutes off their Marathon personal best times, Robert Fox in the Abingdon Marathon, finishing 21st in 2/45/42 and Colin Perry in the Amsterdam Marathon finishing 880th in 3/02/12. Richard Jones was 305th and 3rd Veteran Over 55 in the Great South Run in 65/21.
